Despite the best meteorological efforts of Whitemans Valley, UTNZ held yet another highly successful multidisciplinary weekend at Hutt Valley Clay Target Club. The Boomrock winter 400 managed to test each shooter to their limits across universal trench, compak, and the recently introduced trap one. With excellent results coming from each category, despite the conditions, UTNZ continues to prove to have the most talented all-round shooters.
Big thanks to the event sponsor Boomrock, they have amazing facilities and are a must stop spot for anyone in the Wellington area. Kilwell, Laporte and Target Products continue to support and sponsor UTNZ. Without these generous sponsors UTNZ would not be able to throw the wide variety of competition targets that consistently entertain and challenge shooters across Aotearoa.
The prize pool provided by the UTNZ sponsors continue to be extremely generous. With the handicap system giving the top 10 shooters of each discipline Kilwell vouchers, everyone has a shot to get their hands on prizes. This system works by giving each competitor a number of targets based on their book percentages. All rules, including details on the handicap system, is covered in detail under the ‘handicapping & rules’ tab, at universaltrench.co.nz.
With interest and numbers only increasing for UTNZ, the new in-line system continues to push through more shooters in less time. This system uses a continuous line of shooters, getting five targets per pad (similar to single rise, point-score), instead of the conventional squadding system. This system eliminates the wait time between squads, allowing more shooters, and crucially enough time for shoot-offs on Sunday during the Winter months.
Thank you to the Hutt Valley clay target club for generously hosting UTNZ for the 4th year running. These competitions would not be possible without the magnanimous support provided by clubs like HVCTC. Finally, a huge thanks to everyone who puts time and money into supporting UTNZ. Without the competitors, these shoots would be impossible, as such, we appreciate everyone who came along.
Trap1 100
Red painted the trap One leaderboard, with an astounding 13 possibles across the weekend. Nick Wiseman set a high bar shooting 50/50 on day one. Des Coe and Graeme Ede trailed closely dropping only one target each. Nick proved to be too consistent however, shooting an impressive 100/100 and snatching the win with decisiveness. Graeme matched Nick on day two shooting 50/50 and claiming silver with another impressive score of 99/100. Connor Lim came in third with a consistent Sunday score of 49 to finish on 96/100.
Nick Wiseman and Eddie Ng shot off for 1st handicap score. Nick was not going to be toppled however, giving him gold and Eddie a well-deserved 2nd. Graeme claimed 3rd handicap without any opposition. Congratulations to all the place getters, trap one proves to attract impressive scores on just its 3rd run in the UTNZ repertoire.

Compak 150
The compak started with a dominating lead by Daniel Feutz, smashing the first 50/50 with little to no second barrels, which he wasted no time bragging to anybody with ears. Daniel led the pack going into day two with 72/75. Des Coe, proving he still has it, followed on 70/75, Adam Green was not far off the mark with 69/75.
Day two involved some more impressively set targets by Adam Green, managing to set a diverse and challenging six fields over the weekend. Daniel’s masterclass continued, leaking too few targets to give anyone but Adam a sniff of first place, finishing on an impressive 142/150. Adam managed to confidently secure second place with a lesson in consistency at 139/150. After a shoot off Max Edwards claimed 3rd over Des Coe, both finishing day two on 134/150.
Daniel and Adam shot well enough to get the same placings in the handicap results, with Logan Clarke securing 3rd. Congratulations to all handicap and off the gun prize getters. Universal Trench 150
The main event managed to attract an impressive number of red scores, mostly shared by the winners of the compak and trap one, Daniel and Nick, with 3 possibles each over the weekend. Daniel Feutz had a stranglehold after the first 75, dropping only a single target. James Mackie and Nick Wiseman were desperately trying to stay competitive with an impressive 71/75 each, after day one.
Daniel’s consistency and accuracy proved too much to catch, finishing on a 144/150, with a few more second barrels than day one. Nick Wiseman did not make it easy for him however, making it come down to the wire by shooting the last 50 straight to finish on just one less, 143/150. James Mackie continued his ever-consistent competitiveness clutching a well-deserved 3rd place on 141/150.
Shane Ashforth had an impressive run, claiming 1st in the handicap score without the need for a shoot off. Connor Lim came in 2nd, just behind Shane, again with no shoot off. The rest of the handicap placings managed to entertain us all with a closely contested shoot off. Vaughn Snowling notably beating James Mackie for a well celebrated 10th place.
